Grade 5 General Music, October 2025

This month, students are beginning a research project exploring a Broadway musical of their choice. They may work individually or in groups of up to three students. They may choose how they wish to present their research to the class - a poster, a slideshow, a video, etc. The project description and rubric, including all due dates, will be sent home with students at our second class this month (either 10/13 or 10/14) , and will also be posted on Google Classroom. Students will also get to see exemplars from last year’s students.

Now that we are finished watching portions of Come From Away, we are able to get back into our typical music routines a bit more. We begin every class with Super Quiet Uninterrupted Listening Time, where students listen carefully to musical works and use musical vocabulary to share their observations with the class. Our musician of the month for October is Austrian composer Franz Schubert. We will also be exploring the poetry of German poet Goethe, and listening to Schubert’s setting of his work Der Erlkonig. In order to work on memorization and expression, students will be tasked with memorizing a short poem to present to the class at the end of the month. They will get to choose between two options, both of which will be sent home at our first class of the month (either 10/06 or 10/07).

As part of both our study of musical theatre and our preparations for our concert in May, students will begin learning the song For Good from the musical Wicked. Finally, this month we will begin reading the book Verity Vox and the Curse of Foxfire by Don Martin. This read-aloud will be a long-term endeavor and we will be exploring all of the musical works used in the text over the course of the year.
