Grade 5 General Music, September 2025

It was wonderful to welcome our fifth grade students back to Hoover after the summer vacation! In 5th grade, students will be exploring the world of musical theatre, in addition to preparing for our end of year concert and continuing our work with ukuleles and music literacy. To begin our study of musical theatre, we watched portions of the show Come From Away. If you wish to watch the entire show with your student, it is available on Apple TV (please note that the show does include elements some may consider not appropriate for elementary students, which we either skipped or muted in class). We discussed how the show features a cast of 12, all of whom play multiple roles with minimal costume changes denoting each new character. We also discussed the instrumental musicians, and how unique it is to see them on stage with the actors instead of hidden in a pit. Finally, we brainstormed all of the jobs involved in putting together a musical theatre production.
