Grade 3 General Music, January 2026
Our musician of the month for January is an American duo named Black Violin. Black Violin is a violin and viola duet that blends classical music with hip hop. We are also exploring the poetry of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who lived and wrote in Massachusetts from 1803-1882.
Right before December break, we began listening to a new piece called Kaleidoscope Color. In January, we will begin learning how to sing this piece in multiple parts. Students are also continuing their music literacy work in 6/8 time, reading rhythms containing dotted quarter notes, sets of three eighth notes, and quarter notes followed by eighth notes.
3rd grade students have a variety of exciting opportunities available to them this spring! In our first class of the new year we reviewed the instruments of the orchestra to prepare students for our interactions with the Lexington Symphony. Members of the Lexington Symphony visited Hoover to perform for our students on January 7th, and third graders will be going on a field trip to visit the symphony on January 22nd. These presentations help prepare students to make informed decisions when they are given the opportunity to sign up for instrument lessons later this spring. More information will be coming about that process when we return from February break!
