Grade 1 Music, January 2026

Our musician of the month for January is an American duo named Black Violin. Black Violin is a violin and viola duet that blends classical music with hip hop. We are also exploring the poetry of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who lived and wrote in Massachusetts from 1803-1882.

Right before December break, we began learning a new piece called The Swing, based on a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson. Students are already sounding fantastic as they sing the melody in unison! This piece asks students to sing in a round, so we will be exploring a variety of rounds this spring as we prepare to perform this piece. Students are also continuing their music literacy work in 2/4 time, beginning to read rhythms containing quarter notes and pairs of eighth notes.
