Grade 1 Music, December 2025
This month for our Super Quiet Uninterrupted Listening Time, or SQUILT, students are listening to the works of Leroy Anderson, a composer from Massachusetts who often wrote pieces for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. We will be studying his works The Typewriter, The Syncopated Clock, and Sleigh Ride. We are also exploring the poetry of Maya Angelou this month.
First graders are sounding fantastic on the song Up Up Up! We are now moving on to The Swing by Greg Gilpin, a setting of Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem of the same name. Students are also learning the song Hiyo Ipsi Naya, a Navajo song of happiness, as well as a rhyme called See a Pin. In our literacy work, students are creating their own patterns using quarter notes and pairs of eighth notes before we begin reading rhythm notation.
