Grade 4 General Music, December 2025

This month for our Super Quiet Uninterrupted Listening Time, or SQUILT, students are listening to the works of Leroy Anderson, a composer from Massachusetts who often wrote pieces for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. We will be studying his works The Typewriter, The Syncopated Clock, and Sleigh Ride. We are also exploring the poetry of Maya Angelou this month.

We are pressing ‘pause’ on our study of the piece Radium Girls by Rachel Sumner, and focusing on the new piece Sutoku In. Sutoku In is a Japanese song, the text of which is a poem by Japanese Emperor Sutoku. It was set to music by composer Ruth Morris Gray. Students are also continuing their literacy work, reading rhythms in 6/8 time using a quarter note followed by an eighth note, as well as dotted quarter notes and sets of three eighth notes.
